Featured Restaurant for July 2026:
EL CABRON CANTINA

The stifling summer heat that has been terrorizing us all lately has had me craving food from warmer climes. Something so fresh, flavourful, and delicious that it distracts me from the weather. El Cabrón Cantina was the perfect choice; a Guatemalan restaurant with flavours (and staff!) From all over Latin America.

For our meal, we got a shuco, empanadas, cheese and chicharon pupusas, a quesadilla, and their special mango ceviche.  Shucos are a dish that I'd never heard of before - a popular Guatemalan street food that is essentially a hot dog with all the latin and american fixins; guacamole, mayo, ketchup, mustard, and curtido. This marvelous, monumental meat monolith was delightfully messy.  The delicious, smokey hotdog that is a challenge to eat in the best way possible.  The empanadas were PERFECT. The dough was soft and textbook golden brown, with plenty of meaty (or cheesy!) Filling. This is the kind of dish that I can imagine everyone on Earth enjoying. Even picky, 7-year old me would have loved these. They are mild and comforting, and the perfect canvas to use for their amazing house salsa. The quesadilla was generous and juicy, oozing with cheese and shredded chicken. It was super flavourful and spiced to perfection - a simple dish executed very well.

The ceviche was bright and fresh. The mango perfectly complimented the lime, adding a sweetness to the dish. The homemade chips for dipping only brought out the amazing flavours more. The pupusas were MASSIVE. They were doughy and crispy and so stuffed full of meaty, salty chicharon. The cheese was so abundant that my cheese pull could make a food blogger weep. I tried a few of the house-made hot sauces (all amazing) and my favourite, the sweet and spicy pineapple-habenero sauce went magically well with the smoky, savoury chicharon in my pupusa.

The food at El Cabrón Cantina was superb. While eating I could tell that all of their food was made with not only a great deal of skill, but also genuine passion. Most of their menu is gluten free, and they have plenty of vegetarian options. I truly think that anyone, regardless of pickiness, preferences, or food restrictions, could go to El Cabrón and have a meal that they love.
