THE MUSIC CORNER

In this month’s music corner, I will highlight a few shows you might not want to miss and shout out a couple of festivals including a brand-new country festival in Ancaster.

LIVE AT THE APPOLLO
Fridays June to August

Corner of Appollo and Wentworth in Burlington

I mentioned this last month and it continues throughout the summer at the Price Family home, located at the corner of Appollo and Wentworth Streets in North Burlington (Headon Forest area).  The bands play for tips and the concerts are family friendly (no bathrooms however).  It can get busy but this is a great fun time that the neighbours don’t just accept, but endorse and join in.  The shows take place from 7pm sharp to 8:30pm.   July shows are as follows:

  July 3rd        Ramblin Band
  July 17th  Sonny Boy Mick
  July 31st  Ty Price Band

 BROTT OPERA
July 9th, LR Wilson Hall
July 16th & 18th Theatre Aquarius

I mentioned the two operas that the Brott Music Festival is putting on this year last month and I wanted to touch on them again.   The first performance takes place at LR Wilson Hall at McMaster on July 9th.   Opera’s greatest love stories told through its most iconic music. Quanto Amore is a night of unforgettable arias and duets, capturing the highs and heartbreaks of love with irresistible beauty. Performed by a powerhouse cast and backed by full orchestra, passion, drama, and vocal fireworks take centre stage in a concert that celebrates love at its most thrilling. And when the curtain falls, the night continues as you can meet up for the exclusive Black Box After Party with the cast.

The second opera takes place at Theatre Aquarius.   La Boheme will have 2 performances in July: Thursday July 16th, and Saturday July 18th.    Puccini’s La Bohème returns in a fully staged production that captures the passion, joy, and heartbreak of youth. With some of the most beautiful music ever written, this timeless story of love and loss continues to move audiences around the world. This is the opera that stays with you.

GOAT with GOLDEN FEATHER
July 7th, Bridgeworks

Goat is a Swedish alternative and experimental fusion music group. The band originates—according to its own publicity—from Korpilombolo, Norrbotten County, Sweden.   The seven-piece band performs wearing masks and costumes, with each of the band members remaining anonymous.  The band started playing music when they were children, as part of a local community tradition, centred around voodoo supposedly, and there have been many incarnations of GOAT who have recorded over the last "30 or 40 years". There are now three original "core" members of the band, from Korpilombolo, but in live concerts they are augmented by four other performers from Gothenburg.
Opening for GOAT is Golden Feather, a project started by Steve Kiely and Brad Germain, inspired by their love of the Grateful Dead, The Allman Brothers Band, and other bands that like to jam and take the listeners on a musical journey.  Always a great live show.

BRIDGEWORKS: TIME FADES AWAY: NEIL YOUNG AT 80
A continuing celebration of Neil Young and his music in his 80th year

Fri. July 17th
Bridgeworks

Noted Canadian performer and producer Aaron Goldstein (Kathleen Edwards, Junkhouse, Cowboy Junkies, City And Colour, Daniel Romano) reprises his role as musical director for this celebration of Neil Young’s 80th birthday - mirroring the acclaimed sold-out concert staged at Massey Hall on Young’s birthday last Fall. Goldstein brings with him a cast of some of the country’s most in-demand players and the set will showcase guest performances from a select few of our festival’s featured performers.  If you like Neil Young, then this show is for you.
